Burnt Taste Troubleshooting
A burnt or harsh taste from your device is one of the most common issues vapers encounter. It almost always points to a coil or wicking problem — not a defect in the device itself. Here is a systematic approach to diagnosing and fixing it.
1. Check That Your Coil Is Primed
A new, unprimed coil is the most common cause of a burnt first hit. Before installing a new coil:
- Apply 3–5 drops of e-liquid to the exposed wicking ports and the top of the coil.
- Fill the tank with e-liquid.
- Let it sit for at least 5–10 minutes to allow the cotton to fully saturate.
- Start vaping at the lowest recommended wattage, then increase gradually.
2. Check Your Wattage Setting
Every coil has a rated wattage range printed on its packaging. Vaping above this range vaporizes e-liquid faster than the wick can re-saturate, creating a dry hit and potentially burning the cotton. Lower the wattage to within the rated range.
3. Avoid Chain Vaping
Taking rapid, consecutive puffs does not give the wick time to draw fresh e-liquid to the coil. Pause 20–30 seconds between puffs to allow re-saturation, especially at higher wattages.
4. Check Your E-Liquid Level
If your tank is nearly empty, the wicking ports may not be submerged. Refill when the liquid level drops below the bottom of the wicking ports.
5. Replace the Coil
A coil that has been used past its lifespan will produce a burnt taste even with correct technique. The average coil lasts 1–3 weeks depending on usage, wattage, and e-liquid sweetener content. If a burnt taste persists after the steps above, the coil needs replacing.
Sweetener-heavy e-liquids (dessert flavors in particular) accelerate coil gunking — the sucralose caramelizes onto the coil and shortens its useful life.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Why does my vape taste burnt?
- A burnt taste is usually caused by a dry or saturated coil. The most common causes are: insufficient priming before first use, vaping at wattage above the coil's rated range, chain vaping without allowing the wick to re-saturate, or a coil that needs replacement.
- How do I prime a new coil to prevent burnt hits?
- Drop 3–5 drops of e-liquid directly onto the wicking ports and center hole of the coil. Install it in your tank, fill with e-liquid, and let it sit for 5–10 minutes before your first draw. Start at the lowest recommended wattage.
- How often should I replace my coil?
- Coil life varies by usage and e-liquid type. On average, a coil lasts 1–3 weeks with regular use. Signs of a spent coil include persistent burnt flavor, reduced vapor production, or darkened/gunky wicking material.
